Stream me if you can - Analysis of my Netflix data

Kurzthese

More than 100 million users watch regularly videos via Netflix. But how does the data track of an average "House of Cards"-addicted, binge-watching user look like? I requested my data from Netflix and it told me more about myself than I ever wanted to know...

I am very glad, that no one knows how many trash TV serials I watched as a teenager after school. For the next generation, this could be different. Everything we do online can and will be monitored. This is not only true for social media services and serach engines but as well for streaming services.

In the EU, every user has the right to access a copy of her personal data that a service provider stores. I wanted to know: "What does Netflix know about me?" - and filed a request.

The result was stunning. I clicked 191 times on "play". My longest binge-watching evening took me more than 12 hours. Statistically, I spend serveral days per month watching Netflix. I can see it all in my data set. My streaming provider knows that I clicked 14 times on fast forward when I watched an episode of "13 reasons why".

Such intimate insight can be used not only for improving the services of streaming platforms or even for adjustments in the story of a serial. These data sets can be used for psychological profiling as well. The information about which scenes I used to skip or watched twice can be quite revealing. Or the information that my watching behavior changed dramatically. Findings of psychological research suggest that even more intimate information can be drawn from such data sets than what we might expect...

This talks makes clear why we need better privacy regulation for streaming services.
