Douglas McCarthy
Collections Manager

Douglas McCarthy has a Masters degree in Art History from the University of St Andrews and over the past twenty years, he has worked internationally in museums and archives. At Europeana, Douglas strives to fulfil its modest ambition to "transform the world with culture".

Driven by his passion for open access, Douglas and his Europeana colleagues present compelling stories using digital collections to be shared and reused freely by anyone anywhere. With over 58 million digital objects online, there is an ocean of cultural heritage to dive into and enjoy.

In a personal capacity, Douglas leads an international survey of open access policy and practice in the GLAM (Gallery, Library, Museum, Archive) sector with Dr Andrea Wallace, Lecturer of Law at the University of Exeter. He writes about this work and related topics on Medium.
