#rp19 speaker Margrethe Vestager: Fairness and competitiveness in a digitised world

Apple, Google, Amazon, Facebook - the list of major international corporations sentenced to high fines during Margrethe Vestager's term is long. As EU Competition Commissioner, Vestager is particularly opposed to monopolies and promotes open, fair markets. She talks about taxes, antitrust law, the regulation of Internet giants and platform economy.

Vestager has been European Commissioner for Competition since 2014. In this position, she began to engage against tax deals of Member States and companies. In 2016, she revealed that Ireland had granted Apple tax breaks for years. Thereupon the enterprise had to pay 13 billion euro penalty. So far, the Commission has come to three conclusions against Google. The most recent case concerned Google's AdSense service, which, according to the European Commission, prevented equal opportunities between competitors in online advertising. Most recently, the Commission prevented the merger the mobility divisions of Siemens and the French transport company Alstom.
