Clay 3D printing – Open source and collaborative product design in practice

Short thesis

If we can share 3D designs through the web, it becomes possible to collaborate together on a product idea. With digital fabrication machines we can also distribute production and involve a global community in making them. On Wikifactory you will find projects ranging from robotics to healthcare, furniture to telescopes - this session welcomes M3rlin to show how to 3D print stunning and functional objects from clay through a practical workshop for you to get involved in at re:publica and beyond.

Description

During this session, Wikifactory will first give an introduction on how to collaborate on open source design and hardware through the web by learning from the best practices of software development.

This will pave the way to a practical workshop in 3D printing with clay and showing how to bring a beautiful product idea to life. From taking part in the mixing of the material, to seeing the extrusion happen in real time to a finished product - M3rlin will take us through the whole process. Participants of the session will find this crash course ideal to get started or simply consider how to use ceramic 3D printing to create functional and uniquely beautiful products of all kinds. You will be given the knowhow and resources to be able to continue your own development and begin taking advantage of the many benefits of 3D printing with clay or paste materials over that of plastics.

The workshop will wrap up with a few inspirational perspectives of how digital fabrication, especially with clay, can realise more sustainable and ethical products and hardware.
