We are dedicating re:publica 19 to the long read, the small print, the footnotes; to the power of research, the power of controversy and the urgency not to simplify the issues that divide or unite us.

When abbreviation results in simplification, in slogans exploited to polarise society and destroy political systems, the antidotes can only come in the form of knowledge, information, empathy, dialogue and solidarity.

Once again we will bring together a diverse group of people from all over the world: the digital society. We will talk, we will debate, we may argue; but more than ever, we will go IN DEPTH. Because things are complicated. Things are complex. Things need to be thought through, discussed and looked at from different angles.

re:publica will be your “long read”. We’ll be working together – with our team, the speakers and attendees – in order to find our way in a complex world, to inform and strengthen each other.

Libraries are hubs for facilitating access to knowledge. In an age of "fake news", however, what is needed is not merely a literacy that allows for distinguishing between what is fake and what is not. Rather, what is required is a public pedagogy that reinvigorates the openness and commons nature of information and knowledge in ways that thwart off their creeping commodification. How can librarians, information specialists, activists facilitate this? Let's discuss it in this meetup!

Come and join us for an Ask Me Anything about Technopolit(r)ick(k)s with Nanjira Sambuli! Feel free to use this opportunity to have Nanjira share her insights on terms and conditions in relation to privacy tradeoffs, informational superhighways, and the need to strengthen civic engagement in order to reclaim the discourse about terms and conditions.

Was läuft gut, was war mal besser, wo stehen wir 2019?

Governments and cooperations are abusing the new culture of tl;dr. A culture that can be described as the acceptance that terms and conditions of any kind are too complex and too long for us to deal with. A culture of acceptance, that we have no choice but to trust the ones that represent us.
But we are now realizing that there are serios costs to tl;dr as the modus operandi.
So where do we go from here? And more importantly, are we ready to do what it takes to reverse this course?
