Politics & Society

Reflections on the change of societies and political dynamics due to digitization are at the core of the re:publica programme. We are interested in shifting power balances, in societal change and civic digital action. At re:publica we want to talk about what we need to do for a free and open Internet and its relation to the shifting political paradigms on the continent. We want to explore the intersections of technology with politics and society.

In this track we will discuss surveillance technologies, data and privacy protection, e-privacy, Internet shutdowns and net neutrality. We will look at community networks, the effects of AI on society, digital disobedience, as well as new governance models aided by digital technologies.

We invite activists, civil society representatives, researchers and all persons with experience in these topics to help us examine the interplay of technology and society on a philosophical level as well as on the day-to-day basis. We’ll explore the opportunities of civic tech and debate the state of Internet freedom - based on your contributions. Questions we would like to see tackled e.g. include: How do social media platforms influence the shaping of political opinions? How are movements and communities for Internet freedom, digital democracy and open data developing? What social and legislative processes should be initiated to regulate an ever accelerating automation? Can the blockchain deliver on its promise of revolutionizing governance processes?

The Chinese social credit system has been a widely discussed, charged, and controversial global topic often portrayed as the realization of Orwell`s "1984" or a Black Mirror episode. But both inside and outside of China, understandings concerning the system are far from perfect. One year ahead of its official implementation, we take a closer look at what it is and what it will look like, as our group of experts set out to debunk some of the biggest myths concerning the system.

Come and help us, quite literally, paint a picture of the bright future of Mosul!

The young community of Mosul Space are currently setting up Mosul's first co-working and makerspace, a much needed space for youth to come together in the city, devastated by four years of ISIS occupation.

In this fun, creative session, participants will paint over a current image with a vision of a brighter, tech-driven future - creating a first version of what will become a large public mural, #Mosul2030.

If we want to build inclusive digital societies, we need to be able to imagine a future we want to live in and develop a language to describe our ideas for future societies. This session will share skills on how to design the future. Artists, designers and researchers will present approaches and methodologies how to design future products, scenarios, and concepts.

Libraries are hubs for facilitating access to knowledge. In an age of "fake news", however, what is needed is not merely a literacy that allows for distinguishing between what is fake and what is not. Rather, what is required is a public pedagogy that reinvigorates the openness and commons nature of information and knowledge in ways that thwart off their creeping commodification. How can librarians, information specialists, activists facilitate this? Let's discuss it in this meetup!

For this lecture/performance of an on-going project entitled “Red,” Tiara Roxanne will illustrate the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and Western Indigeneity. The session will address the impossibility of decolonization, i.e., “I cannot decolonize my body.” By reinterpreting processes of colonial recovery through a performative and critical lens, we will arrive at notions of digital borders, the digital body and lastly, digital flesh.
