MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin
Dick Pics & Death Threats: Handling Web Harassment

Kurzthese

Social media is a great way to build a name for yourself as a journalist or blogger. But along with an enhanced reputation, women who grab attention online are often confronted with incessant harassment -- from unsolicited pornography in their private messages to threats against their lives. This workshop aims to address ways in which both men and women can combat online abuse while remaining in the public sphere.

Beschreibung

For years, women have been reporting being overwhelmed by the threats and harassment that they face online. In 2015, women journalists responding to a US survey said that nearly 2/3 of them had experienced threats, sexist abuse, intimidation, threats and harassment in the course of doing their work. Silencing journalists threatens the free flow of information that is vital in democracies. While women are making inroads in terms of representation in media, some women in media (myself included) are choosing to either self-censor or to maintain a low-profile presence, especially on social media, as little has been done to combat the relentless harassment women face online. After a brief overview of the gendered experiences of harassment online, this session will invite an exchange of ideas as to how women can maintain security without forfeiting their online presence and provide tips for those experiencing or witnessing harassment as to how to best handle it.

The workshop will be held in English.
