Emerging Technologies in informal Economies: The inclusion Dilemma

Kurzthese

The rise of emerging technologies in most developing economies has somewhat been faced by a paradox. The situation has been smart technologies have resulted in the exclusion of minority groups such as women, the informal sector and rural communities in the status quo. The discussion is on how emerging technological development must include them to avoid a situation of "not connected; can't afford" population.

Beschreibung

The session will bring case studies of women or minority groups in an informal setup. Street vendors/retailers, living under the poverty datum line, are unbanked, have no savings, bank accounts or access to financial services. These women are in the fast growing cities which are embracing smart technologies, high tech bus transit systems, buildings and connected homes. These emerging technologies though important, are beyond the reach of the informal sector which makes up over 65% of most African economies. They are too expensive and inaccessible. However very important.

Upon this background, in form of a panel discussion will raise questions on how we can foster low cost inclusive technologies and devices. How the informal sector can benefit from mobile money payment options.

Real life situations will be presented. I will speak about Green Spaces; my project. And how outdoor space revitalization is providing inclusive spaces for creativity and local commerce for the informal sector. Also efforts I am making at ISOC Zimbabwe to foster awareness and innovation on emerging technologies in Zimbabwe.

Solutions from the participants will be called upon and debates encouraged. About 30 participants in round table set up. Expected outcomes are the realization that, technology must include the marginalized communities for effectiveness.
