Die Debatte um Vielfalt im internationalen Film- und Fernsehgeschäft hat in den letzten Jahren an Dynamik gewonnen und treibt auch die Branche hierzulande um. Dennoch erscheinen viele Film- und TV-Produktionen von dem Trend unberührt. Wie gelingt es Film und Fernsehen, ethnokulturelle Klischees zu durchbrechen und Formate zu entwickeln, die die Vielfalt unserer Gesellschaft widerspiegeln? Und wie können gute Geschichten unsere Sichtweisen verändern?

The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of: Diverse Perspectives for Better Content

The fact that Germany is a multifaceted and diverse society is not reflected in our films and TV programmes yet. Female film creators in Germany have built up a lobbying organisation in Pro Quote Film, which has managed to be heard at this point. However, when it comes to the involvement of people with migration backgrounds, people of color, LGBT people or the disabled, participation is still considerably lower. In the US, the “Oscars so white” debate has made considerable waves, and in the aftermath of #MeToo, the whole world is debating the role of women in the entertainment industry. The debate surrounding diversity in the international TV business has gained traction over the past years and is also a concern to the industry in Germany. Still, many film and TV productions remain unaffected by this trend. How can current attitudes to life and societal reality be transported in a more modern way? How can film and TV in Germany break away ethnic and cultural stereotypes and develop formats that reflect the diverse character of our society? And how can good stories change our perspectives?
