Melissa Chan

Melissa Chan is a national and foreign affairs reporter based between Los Angeles and Berlin. She is a collaborator with the Global Reporting Centre. Over the past year, she has been working with The New York Times on a series of special video projects focusing on technology, democracy, and global affairs and how these forces impact ordinary people. She is also an editor and presenter at German broadcaster Deutsche Welle’s news program on Asia.

Previously, she worked for Al Jazeera America, covering stories on social justice, the economy, the environment, and the rural American West. With Al Jazeera English, she served as China correspondent for five years before her expulsion from the country in 2012 for the channel's reports. Her work has received a number of awards, including two Human Rights Press Awards from Amnesty, the Asian Television Award, and a nod from the Overseas Press Club. Additionally, her pieces have appeared in The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, VICE News, POLITICO, and Foreign Policy. She has reported from around the world, from Cuba to North Korea, Mongolia to Gaza.

She is a graduate of Yale University and the London School of Economics.
