In Search of Forgotten Colors

Kurzthese

In this workshop we are going to address the environmental problems posed by synthetic colors and pigments in the fashion & textile industry and look at the possible solutions of it with regard to natural chemicals provided by nature.

Beschreibung

Today, textile production is one of the world’s most polluting industry. The total greenhouse gas emissions from textile production currently stands at 1.2 billion tonnes annually and this is more than those of all international flights and maritime shipping combined.

It is estimated that over 10,000 different dyes and pigments are used industrially and over 700 tons of synthetic dyes are annually produced worldwide. In the textile industry tons and tons of these dyes are lost to effluents every year during the dyeing and finishing operations, due to the inefficiency of the dyeing process. Unfortunately, most of these dyes escape conventional wastewater treatment processes and persist in the environment as a result of their high stability to light, temperature, water, detergents, chemicals, soap and other parameters such as bleach and perspiration. The synthetic origin and complex aromatic structure of these agents make them more recalcitrant to bio degradation.

On the contrary if we look, our ancestors used ancient pigments which had no environmental problems.

1- In this workshop, we'll find out the natural alternatives to chemical pigments/dyes and revisit the ancient colors.

2- Go through some already sourced materials from nature and find out how it is converted into organic pigments.

3- Lastly, experiment dying fibres with the natural pigments and find out the traditional futures of colors.
