Resulting from the relentless pursuit of e-scooter companies to acquire new users and reach significant scale, early test markets have introduced new regulatory schemes to effectively manage the distribution and deployment of dockless scooters on their streets. Other cities are following suit, ordering companies to pack up their fleets until regulators can finalize new permitting rules. The limitations of current micromobility schemes to support cities in their endeavors to mitigate the adverse effects of urbanization are becoming ever-more evident, leaving municipalities in dire in need of equitable and sustainable mobility solutions. How mobility companies can serve local governments going forward will remain a sticking point for the entire industry.
Mastering the urban mobility challenge centers on two key questions:

How can users find the right mode of transportation for their individual urban trip and individual budget?

Conversely, how can mobility solutions serve communities and further the goals of policymakers while remaining economically viable?
To this day, capturing the entire mobility user journey has posed an insurmountable challenge, not solved by any major players in the market. Consequently, we call for a holistic view on the future of urban mobility, focused on connecting existing with new mobility concepts, based on a viable commercial model that allows for addressing everyday user needs. By doing so, we will gain unprecedented insight into user demand patterns and will be enable urban planner and lawmakers s to design the smart city of tomorrow.
