Politics & Society
Reflections on the change of societies and political dynamics due to digitization are at the core of the re:publica programme. We are interested in shifting power balances, in societal change and civic digital action. At re:publica we want to talk about what we need to do for a free and open Internet and its relation to the shifting political paradigms on the continent. We want to explore the intersections of technology with politics and society.
In this track we will discuss surveillance technologies, data and privacy protection, e-privacy, Internet shutdowns and net neutrality. We will look at community networks, the effects of AI on society, digital disobedience, as well as new governance models aided by digital technologies.
We invite activists, civil society representatives, researchers and all persons with experience in these topics to help us examine the interplay of technology and society on a philosophical level as well as on the day-to-day basis. We’ll explore the opportunities of civic tech and debate the state of Internet freedom - based on your contributions. Questions we would like to see tackled e.g. include: How do social media platforms influence the shaping of political opinions? How are movements and communities for Internet freedom, digital democracy and open data developing? What social and legislative processes should be initiated to regulate an ever accelerating automation? Can the blockchain deliver on its promise of revolutionizing governance processes?

- Politics & SocietyParticipatory Paradise-Low-income earners in South Africa pay a significantly high proportion of their income to access the internet, and the affordability divide between low- and high-income earners is creating barriers to connecting the poor. This has given rise to the #Datamustfall movement which has gained significant traction on Social Media and led the South African Government to launch an inquiry. In this session we explore how this movement began and how it is influencing SA's telecommunications policy.
- Politics & SocietySYSTEM:ERROR-Despite a broad consensus in the scientific community, many people doubt the severity of the climate crisis. Others are aware of the problem but have large negative environmental impacts. Studies show that our personal opinion and behavior is mainly influenced by our social environment rather than by our knowledge of scientific facts. We discuss about why we believe what we believe, whether we live in a CO₂-class society and if our carbon footprint is smaller than that of a climate skeptic.

- Politics & SocietyParticipatory Paradise-Europa wird 2019 seine Netzneutralität reformieren und dabei steht viel auf dem Spiel. Während die Netzneutralität von der Trump Regierung abgeschafft wurde, hat Indien seine Regeln vervollständigt. Dort wo die Telekomindustrie in der politischen Auseinandersetzung bisher gescheitert ist, versucht sie mit dem neuen Mobilfunkstandard 5G harte Fakten zu schaffen. Dieser Talk bringt Licht ins Dunkel der Heilsversprechen von 5G und zeigt wo die Netzneutralität sonst noch in Gefahr ist.
- Politics & Society-Der Pocket Brother ist eine Tasche für Smartphones, Geldkarten, Reisepässe oder allgemein elektronische Datenträger. Das Abschirmgewebe schirmt im Hochfrequenzbereich ab. Bei dem Workshops stellen wir Nähmaschinen, Stoffreste und das Abschirmgewebe zur Verfügung und nähen mit den Teilnehmer*innen die Pocket Brother. Das Endprodukt soll für den Umgang mit Daten und möglichen Abhörmaßnahmen sensibilisieren.
- Politics & Society-Seit Anfang 2019 teilt in Österreich ein Algorithmus alle Jobsuchenden in Kategorien ein. Warum dadurch mindestens 50.000 Menschen auf der Strecke bleiben und wie das Programm des Arbeitsmarktservices (AMS) Frauen, Migranten, Kranke und Alte diskriminiert.

I take the audience on a tour of sexual technologies past and present, and explain how a new wave of technologies offer an immersive sexual experience unlike anything that has come before. These technologies are leading to the emergence of a new sexual identity: “digisexuality”. I engage participants in a discussion about their use of sexual technologies. And I urge: Don’t panic. While the technologies present challenges, they also offer exciting opportunities.
