Politics & Society
Reflections on the change of societies and political dynamics due to digitization are at the core of the re:publica programme. We are interested in shifting power balances, in societal change and civic digital action. At re:publica we want to talk about what we need to do for a free and open Internet and its relation to the shifting political paradigms on the continent. We want to explore the intersections of technology with politics and society.
In this track we will discuss surveillance technologies, data and privacy protection, e-privacy, Internet shutdowns and net neutrality. We will look at community networks, the effects of AI on society, digital disobedience, as well as new governance models aided by digital technologies.
We invite activists, civil society representatives, researchers and all persons with experience in these topics to help us examine the interplay of technology and society on a philosophical level as well as on the day-to-day basis. We’ll explore the opportunities of civic tech and debate the state of Internet freedom - based on your contributions. Questions we would like to see tackled e.g. include: How do social media platforms influence the shaping of political opinions? How are movements and communities for Internet freedom, digital democracy and open data developing? What social and legislative processes should be initiated to regulate an ever accelerating automation? Can the blockchain deliver on its promise of revolutionizing governance processes?
- Politics & Society-Are internet business models fueled by targeted advertising compatible with democracy and human rights? This dialog brings together experts on the internet, human rights and society to brainstorm with the re:publica community how we all -- as citizens and as internet users -- can hold companies accountable for their business models.
- Politics & Society-Oftentimes, privacy is seen as an abstract concept with little to no relevance to day-to-day life. Especially with regard to Non-European countries, it is argued that people do not care about privacy. We went to rpAccra and did a drawing session, asking: What does privacy mean to you? In Berlin, we would like to do the same, comparing the pictures and initiating a conversation around different cultural conceptions of privacy. Pop in, illustrate and share your image of what privacy means to you!
- Politics & SocietyExpress Yourself-Your digital profile extends far beyond the data you feed into mobile apps. What you may not be willing to say, is likely to be revealed by your behavioural data. If there are missing bits in your profile, this data will be inferred by algorithms. It will be statistical truth - not your personal truth - but from market perspective it does not really matter. We are no longer users of "free" online services. Becoming fuel for surveillance capitalism, we lost voice and control. How did it happen?
- Politics & Society-Die Initiative OpenSchufa von der Open Knowledge Foundation und Algorithmwatch hat zu Datenspenden aufgerufen, um mehr über den Schufa-Algorithmus zu erfahren. Datenjournalisten von Spiegel und BR haben über die Initiative berichtet und die Daten ausgewertet. Es werden die Ergebnisse der Analyse präsentiert und auch diskutiert, wie eng Journalisten und Aktivisten eigentlich zusammenarbeiten dürfen. Was ist der Nutzen und wo liegen die Grenzen?
- Politics & Society-Stell dir vor, wir wären im Jahr 2044 und blicken zurück nach 2019!: Da war vielleicht was los. Erst hieß es #MeToo und Frauen* auf der ganzen Welt haben von von ihren Erfahrungen mit Gewalt und Diskriminierungberichtet. Wir fingen an zu reden, haben unser Handeln reflektiert und uns miteinander verbündet. Zur gleichen Zeit wurden die Populist*innen in Europa immer lauter, reaktionäre Kräfte auch. Aber die haben wir hinter uns gelassen. Genauso wie das Patriarchat. Und zwar gemeinsam.

Zeit, einmal zurückzublicken und all die Anekdoten, Ereignisse und Kuriositäten zu betrachten, die Open Source und Freie Software geprägt und auch auf die Probe gestellt haben. Michael Kleinhenz und Oliver Zendel waren von Anfang an dabei und geben einen ironisch-amüsanten Rückblick auf die Entwicklung einer Kulturtechnologie deren Auswirkungen heute weit über die Technologieszene hinaus wirksam sind.
- Politics & Society-Social-Media-Leute, YouTuber und Influencer drängen auf den Markt und die Künstlersozialkasse prüft seit Jahren, wie mit ihnen umzugehen ist: Wann sind sie Künstler*innen, wann können sie die spottbillige Kranken- und Rentenversicherung über die KSK in Anspruch nehmen (nur 35 € Mindestbeitrag für die Krankenkasse!)?
Der Workshop informiert über die wichtigsten Vorteile der KSK und stellt den Stand der Dinge dar - wer darf rein und wer (noch) nicht? - Politics & SocietyExpress Yourself-Rechte Influencer kochen, singen, machen Hauls - und schaffen es so in die Youtube-Trends und Instagram-Feeds Hunderttausender. Der Vortrag zeigt, wie rechte Influencer-Netzwerke aussehen, wie sie funktionieren, wer sie finanziert, wem sie nutzen und zeigt vor allem, warum uns deren Erfolg zwar beunruhigen, aber keinesfalls überraschen sollte.
- Politics & SocietyParticipatory Paradise-Several EU governments use automated decision-making systems to score citizens, either to spot welfare fraud, detect whether children are in danger of neglect, or determine how much care elderly or disabled persons should get. AlgorithmWatch's research shows that these systems are deployed much more widely than commonly known in many countries in Europe, and that they lack oversight and accountability.

Despite its sophistication, AI can and does discriminate and amplify bias. Our digital society needs to act swiftly: There needs to be more transparency, and ways to correct mistakes and enforce accountability. If we succeed, we can build an innovative *and* just digital society.
